La Cenerentola: Short Synopsis

Angelina (Cenerentola) is treated as a servant by her stepfather Don Magnifico and Magnifico’s daughters because her mother has died. A beggar comes to their house. The Magnifico daughters try to get rid of him, but Angelina gives him bread and coffee. The beggar is the tutor of Prince Don Ramiro. He encourages the prince to visit her home. The prince pretends to be a squire to find true love. Angelina meets Prince Ramiro, who pretends to be a squire.

The squire Dandini comes to Angelina’s house pretending to be the prince. Don Magnifico, Magnifico’s daughters, and the others go to the prince’s castle. Angelina wants to ask them to take her with them, but they leave her behind. When Angelina is at home, the prince’s tutor arrives to help her.

A beautifully dressed Angelina visits the prince’s castle. No one recognizes her. The prince falls in love with her at first sight. She gives him one of the bracelets she wears on each arm.

Angelina

Please look for me. I wear a bracelet on my hand. If you do not dislike me, we will be together.

She leaves the castle. The prince sets out to find her. (“Sì, ritrovarla io giuro”)

The prince’s carriage breaks down near her house. It was because the prince’s tutor had tampered with the carriage. The prince visits Angelina’s house and finds a bracelet on her arm where she works as a servant. The prince and Angelina are married at the castle. (“Nacqui all’affanno… Non più mesta”)
